Miner Woolem still wows 'em with gimslingiiiig was born. Today, there are roughly 200,000 fast draw enthusiasts. "Shooting was going on before Dee hit the scene, but he is accredited with starting the modern day sport of fast draw," said Pat McMahon, an Arizona fast draw champ and member of the World Fast Draw Association. "He was the man." Three different gun companies paid him to be their sharpshooting ambassador.

Woolem still has a scratchy 16mm promotional film he made while stumping for Daisy Manufacturing's BB gun six-shooter as "the Daisy Kid." In the film, a young Woolem shows off fancy gun tricks like the reverse spin and over-the-shoulder flip. "Practice, practice, practice," he commented while viewing the film in his living room. Woolem practiced 4 to 5 hours a day in his prime. These days, Woolem puts his expertise to use teaching shotgun shooting at the Prado Olympic Shooting Park. everyone from millionaires to movie stars, his most famous student being Sammy Davis Jr.

He also shot his way through the television variety show circuit, appearing on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "What's My Line," to name a few. With his lightning trigger finger and his down-home charm, Woolem is credited with pioneering the sport of fast draw. It all started back in 1954 at Knott's Berry Farm, where Woolem an out-of-work tuba player was hired to be the park's first train robber stunt-man. With only four trains to rob an hour, Woolem had a lot of spare time on his hands. To kill the boredom, he took up fast draw.

Eager for some competition, Woolem organized a local fast draw competition. Determining the winners proved to be a chore, since fast draw is well, fast. So Woolem built an electronic timing deArmed with his invention, this modern day gunslinger hit the tour circuit. Pretty soon a sport cent of the time, after they watched my show, they were no longer around." Woolem took his fast draw and trick shooting show to the corners of the country, and nearly every cranny in between. "Oh, the people just flocked in every time I dug out my guns," Woolem said.

It's all in his scrap books. There's a photo of Woolem shaking hands with the mayor of Monongahela, Pa. There he is handing a $1,000 check he won to the Buena Park (Calif.) Boys Club. There's Woolem striking a serious pose with his pistol and 10-gallon hat There he is on stage at the Stardust in Las Vegas, a gun-twirling cowboy surrounded by a flock of sequin-studded showgirls with long legs and feather plumes. "Now that was a kick," he said.

"I was the only guy in the show." Almost as fun was the time Gen. Curtis LeMay invited him to the Pentagon in 1959 to demonstrate combat quick draw. Over the years, Woolem says, he's instructed By Lou Basheda Riverside Press-Enterprise CORONA, Calif. John Wesley Hardin was one of the fastest guns in the Old West. Legend has it that Hardin balancing a silver dollar on the back of his right hand could yank that hand away, pull a gun from his holster and fire a shot all before the coin hit the dirt.

With all due respect, Dee Woolem can top that. In Woolem's prime, the late 1950s, he could fire not one, not two, but three shots bang, bang, bang before the silver dollar hit the ground. Back at his Corona home, 72-year-old Woolem keeps scrapbooks full of aging newspaper articles heralding him "the father of fast draw." "Kids! Meet in person the fastest gun reads a faded headline from Allentown, Pa. In his prime, Woolem was timed drawing and firing in 12-hundredths of a second faster than the blink of an eye. "There was always a local fast gun who said I think I could beat Woolem said in a Texas twang as slow and thick as molasses.
